With a hiatus in tourism, retail and hospitality, due to the smoke and threat of fires across the region, business owners have noticed a reduction in activity.
Many local businesses have also been providing generous donations to those impacted by fire and visiting emergency services.
To help boost morale and the local economy and provide some relief for local businesses, Port Macquarie Chamber of Commerce wants to encourage entering the competition and shopping locally this festive season.
"I can't stress how important it is to look to supporting regional communities and shopping locally, before spending your Christmas budget elsewhere.
"We hope this competition injects some Christmas spirit and makes shopping a positive experience for everyone.
"You'll find plenty of diverse and clever gift ideas, either in local shops or at the Buy Regional website," said Port Chamber executive officer, Mark Wilson.
The 2019 'Spirit of Christmas' competition is open to all businesses within the Greater Port Macquarie region.
Just dress your shop-front or office for the festive season and post a photo to the Port Macquarie Chamber of Commerce Facebook page using the #shoplocalPMQ hashtag.
The recipient of this year's shield will be chosen based on the amount of 'likes', shares and the most 'Christmassy' decorations, at the discretion of Chamber judges.
The competition closes on Tuesday, December 17 with the winner announced the following day.
