Member for Port Macquarie, Leslie Williams said funding from the Local Domestic and Family Violence Committee Grants program supports grassroots events that are designed to put the issue front and centre to better support victims and their families
"Domestic and family violence has no place in our community which is why it is important we invest in local initiatives that get people talking," Mrs Williams said.
Liberty Domestic and Family Violence Specialist Services is one of 34 local domestic and family violence committees who have received $1,200.
The Coastal Walk Against Domestic and Family Violence is a popular and free community event. It helps create a safer community for residents of the Port Macquarie-Hastings region. This Sunday's event (December 1) is being held during the international 16 Days of Activism campaign which challenges violence against women and children.
"By raising awareness we can build a safer, more respectful and supportive community that improves support for people who are experiencing violence in the home," Mrs Williams said.
Participants can do the full 11km starting at Lighthouse Beach at 8.00am, 3km starting at Flynns Beach at 9.00am, or 2km starting at Town Beach at 9.30am. Free buses will run from Westport Park to Lighthouse and Flynns at the start of the walk.
Inspiring domestic violence survivor, Rachael Natoli will speak at the end of the walk at Westport Park.
