Almost every base has been covered so far this season, from washouts to smoke-outs, throw in a few byes along the way, and it's been a disrupted start.

Wauchope RSL certainly aren't alone, but a lack of consistent cricket and suffering from a significant turnover of players from last season could be attributed to their slow start to the campaign.

Captain Matt Miller indicated before a ball was bowled that almost every spot was up for grabs in his line-up, but with a lack of consistent game time, he's still none the wiser.

"It's very hard to gain momentum with all of the disruptions to play, however it's the same for everyone and cannot be helped," he said.

"We know what we have to do to compete."

A number of players have another opportunity to stake a claim this weekend when RSL take on another side on the rise - Port Macquarie Pirates - at Oxley Oval.

Nathan Lyon returns at the top of the order after he missed Wauchope's defeat to Rovers last weekend.

Riley Mallyon, Quinn Pares and Jake Morgan-Monk have all been names thrown around the inner sanctum as ones to watch.

They've shown glimpses of what they can do, but consistency has been the biggest issue.

"There are positive signs moving forward and I'm especially proud of Riley and Quinn for their efforts being their first year in premier league," Miller said.

Pirates captain Connor Cook admitted the disrupted start to the season hadn't impacted on his side greatly although they were looking forward to playing on a week-to-week basis..

"The start to the season hasn't been ideal but it should be smooth sailing in terms of playing consecutive games before Christmas," he said.

Cook has been happy with Pirates' start to the campaign which saw them register their first victory of the season last weekend.

"Last week was close to one of our best games we have played as a unit and we will get better from stringing a few games like that together and start to get a few key blokes into form," he said.

Pirates are wary of a Wauchope side that has started the season with inconsistent form.
