The wax lyrical group has garnered more than 30 registered individuals for free monthly songwriting meets held every fourth Sunday at the Conservatorium of Music (Old Scout Hall ) in Hollingworth Street from 4pm to 6pm.
There are a number of regional Australian Songwriters Association groups who act as non-profit member organisations dedicated to the support of songwriters in Newcastle, the Gold Coast, Northern Rivers and Tasmania.
Mid North Coast assistant organiser Kenneth Shaw, who has written around 50 or 60 songs over the last 50 years said the collective is all about promoting expression of art.
"These groups are all over Australia, there is one in Newcastle, one in Lismore and we just started the one on the Mid North Coast in March this year," he said.
"We had a meet and greet in November last year and invited anyone who was interested. There was about 20 people who attended from Macksville, Lansdowne, Old Bar and all over.
"At the wax lyrical you can get up and sing your own song as an open mic. It's always got to be original songs.
"It's about having an outlet and for most people it's not their job or career, it's just what they enjoy doing. It's a way of expressing themselves."
Individuals from the group are also competing for a spot in the finals of the National Songwriting Contest to be held in Sydney on November 31 .
"You just have to look around the pubs and clubs to see there's plenty of talented musical locals in Port Macquarie," said Mr Shaw.
"Playing some musical instrument is a start and being somewhat poetic is definitely helpful. People often are writing about things from their personal life or experiences that have happened to themselves.
"There's some people who have written half a dozen songs and some who have written a hundred and fifty."
The next meet is on Sunday, November 24.
