Local hairdressers Evelina Kemp and Liz Robinson had their hands full as they volunteered their time to give free haircuts to people doing it tough.

"There are people without the possibility of coming to have a haircut in my shop. I can still do things to help them out," said Ms Kemp.

"I've been hairdressing here since the project started but I've been doing work for the less fortunate all my life.

"I think having a haircut is a big soul release to feel more fresh, you're taking care of yourself and you can have a talk as well."

Residents enjoyed the pre-Christmas haircut, a cup of tea, food and a chat at the Port Macquarie Anglican Soup Kitchen.

Garry Kemp, who has lived in Port Macquarie for 13 years said a chance meeting led to him getting a hair cut routinely.

"It feels good to have a haircut. I've been wanting to come down here for a couple of weeks," he said.

"I have a haircut first and then I have a meal, talk to people about whatever they want to talk about.

"I came in here one day and the lady happened to be cutting hair. I said 'I'd like a hair cut too'."

"Now I get a good haircut every time I come in."

The Community Hair Project began in Port Macquarie in November last year and has garnered support from local support agencies and generous businesses.
