Luke, a Comboyne resident, has been training and competing in mountain biking under his own steam, building practice tracks with his brother, as well as working on his family's avocado farm.
All this while quietly amassing success in national and international competitions. I was extremely honoured to present Luke with a $4000 scholarship to assist him to travel to compete in races during 2020.
Shania Madden in dressage and Lleyton Wall in triathlon offered such high quality achievements that the Mayor's Sporting Fund committee also awarded them $500 each to assist with future competitions.
The sporting talent in our community is truly inspiring, and we are delighted to financially assist our young rising stars.
I congratulate all our nominees and award winners - and their supporters - on their hard work, determination and achievements, and wish them success.
Perhaps they will add their name to the list of our sporting legends including wheelchair rugby player Ryley Batt, swimmer James Magnussen and cyclist Lauren Kitchen.
And a huge thank you to everyone who has contributed to the Mayor's Sporting Fund, especially the MSF committee and this year's sponsors - Eagle Insurance Brokers, MBC Recruitment and Regional Australia Bank.
Without the support of our sponsors we would not be able to provide this financial assistance to our young sports men and women each year.
Our whole community benefits from living a fit and active lifestyle.
Council will continue to develop high quality facilities with something for everyone from walking paths to competitive sporting venues.
