The group have been making more than 40 quilts every year since 2014 to give to the patients at the unit at Wauchope Hospital.
Helen Clunas, who is president of Wauchope Patchwork Quilters, said they were devastated when their storeroom at the Rotary Youth Hall was broken into on September 28. Thieves stole 15 quilts, which taken 20 hours to make, a sewing machine, a laminator, a lamp and a money box.
Jayne Denise is a quilter from Canberra whose husband comes from Wauchope. She was the first person to contact Wauchope quilters after the theft, which they posted on Facebook. Jayne sent a quilt to the group which was very grateful.
"Thank you to everyone who shared our post, commented, offered moral support and to those people and groups who have sent us fabric, quilt tops, offered sewing machines (two were accepted) and completed quilts to aid in the replacement of the quilts that were stolen," said Helen Clunas.
"A very special thank you to 'The Carpetbaggers' - Floor Covering retailers on the mid north coast of NSW who made a very generous monetary donation from funds raised at their Charity Golf Day a few weeks ago."
As yet there have been no sightings of the quilts, the sewing machine, the laminator, the table top magnifying light nor the money box with donations for an orphanage home/school in Bali.
"Our members have been overwhelmed by the support shown by thousands of people over this theft and their faith in humanity has certainly been restored. We have attempted to acknowledge or comment on all posts, however if we have missed a few, our apologies. Again, thank you everyone for your support," added Helen.
Wauchope Patchwork Quilters meet at the Rotary Hall beside Bain Park every Tuesday night from 5.30pm to 9.30pm, and on Thursday mornings from 9am to 1pm.
