Occupational Therapists (OTs) support people of all abilities to engage in activities they find meaningful including leisure, self-care and productivity.
Across the Mid North Coast Local Health District (MNCLD), OTs work at public hospitals and Community Health centres from Laurieton in the south to Woolgoolga in the north and west to Dorrigo.
MNCLHD Occupational Therapist Anthea Young said the work of OTs is diverse and very rewarding.
"For example, our daily tasks can vary from supporting stroke patients on their journey to recovery, to conducting regular outpatient paediatric clinics for our youngest clients.
"We are part of a multi-disciplinary team where we're all focused on the same goals, ensuring our patients get the best possible care in a positive, inclusive and supportive environment," Ms Young said.
"We work closely with our patients to identify what is important to them and together we develop a plan to achieve those goals. This may be something as simple as being able to make a cup of tea, or getting in and out of bed independently, but to our patients it can make a world of difference to their daily lives."
Occupational therapists provide services such as physical and mental health therapy, vocational rehabilitation, chronic disease management, assessments for assistive technology and home modifications, and key disability supports and services. Occupational therapists support people across all ages.
Occupational therapists group "occupations" into three broad categories:
- Leisure, for example, reading, knitting or playing sport;
- Self-care, for example, showering, applying make-up and cooking; and
- Productivity, for example, doing schoolwork, volunteering or participating in paid employment.
