Association trio Laura Cudmore, Raquel Lievore and Mandy McKinnon have followed in the footsteps of their male counterparts after being selected for Australia.

The girls will represent their country against the Rest of the World in Sydney on December 1 followed by a Trans-Tasman Series in April next year.

In doing so, they will forever be remembered as Port Macquarie's first three women's oztag representatives to don the green and gold.

Strong performances in those matches could also see them selected for the 2021 Tag World Cup in Ireland.

Association president Greg Smith said it was satisfying to see the same formula that served him and his team well throughout the men's 40s and 45s division had been replicated.

"One of the key factors in players being selected is a great coach as we've seen over the years with our men's 45s and Dave Bradley as coach," Smith said.

"That same formula has been repeated with Steve van Gemert and the net result is three females in the Australian team.

"I'm extremely proud to see these girls as our first-ever Australian female representatives because they'll always be the first three."

Cudmore said it was more than just an individual accolade and their success was largely due to the continued development and progression of the women's 27s team over the last five years.

"There's no way you could put it down to just yourself and your own playing ability," she said.

"It helps, but if your whole team doesn't get you to the Sunday or the finals, you don't get a look in.

"No matter how well you play individually you're not going to make those top sides."

Cudmore's selection was a culmination of years of hard work where her focus had shifted from playing "for fun, enjoyment and fitness" to a belief she was good enough to make an Australian team.

"It wasn't until I had played for a fair few years that I thought I was good at it and it was a future goal to make an Australian team," she said.

"I guess I just never thought it was possible at the time."

Lievore admitted having the same coach for the last four years was now seeing them reap the rewards.

"The whole team has come a long way since he started coaching us," she said.

"We had a year or two before he came in and we couldn't get to a quarter-final and him working with us has improved a lot of things.

"It's awesome; I was very surprised about (being selected), but it's a credit to our team and our coach helping us all to get there."

Meanwhile, registrations are still open for the upcoming local oztag season with mixed divisions to be played on Monday night and men's on Wednesday starting next week.

Players can sign up at the Tuffins Lane fields.
