The Sydney resident was at Lake Cathie Bowling Club with other members of Transplant NSW for a visit over the weekend of October 5-6.

Medical technology has come a long way since Heather underwent the transplant operation in 1979.

She was told that the transplant would only take for about five years and anything after that would be a bonus.

"So I've had a big bonus," she said.

Prior to the operation Heather was on dialysis for about seven years.

The operation gave Heather a new lease on life, as she was able to work and participate in sport again.

Heather has also competed at numerous World Transplant Games and Australian Transplant Games.

The Camden Haven weekend was co-organised by North Haven residents Wayne and Reg Garvan.

Wayne underwent a kidney transplant in 2018 and said he was lucky to be alive after the operation.

The kidney came from his sister Sharon and initially failed to adapt to his body.

Reg Garvan said it's important for members of the group to meet for social reasons and to share their experiences.

Ten of the 18 attendees from Transplant NSW have received transplants.

The group meets three or four times a year at different locations across the state.

Another visitor David Sheather underwent a liver transplant 14 months ago and said he's feeling great.

Mr Sheather was told he would need a transplant 16 years ago. He was put on the waiting list in October 2017. The operation was in August 2018.

Prior to the transplant Mr Sheather said he "looked like death" but post operation he has a "new zest for life".

Mr Sheather has written a letter to the person who donated their liver to thank them.
