But coach Cheryl Neville wasn't too concerned as they took advantage of their first swim of the season to brush out the cobwebs.
"We didn't really have any expectations," she said.
Junior swimmers Lily Barlow, Megan Goldie and Maeve Kinchington achieved personal goals by finishing in the placings in the 100-metre breaststroke.
"They went on par with what they normally do," Neville said.
"They got little improvements in some events and in others they were a bit equal. Lily and Megan aren't really breaststrokers."
Neville said there were no expectations with the carnival a chance to get a basis on what the swimmers have to do to head in the direction they want to go this season.
"Some of the kids have already got national times so it wasn't so important for them, but it's race practice and we don't get enough of it up here," she said.
"Every race they go in is better for them so overall I was reasonably happy with them and thought they went fairly well."
The two-day carnival "got them going for the season" ahead of the district event at the end of November.
"A lot of them will use that one to get qualification times to state which is a few weeks after," Neville said.
"So there are plenty of opportunities for that kind of thing."
