The World Meteorological Organisation is an agency of the United Nations whose mandate covers weather, climate and water resources.
Mr Eades said he was thrilled to be selected.
"It kind of blew me away," he said.
The winning photograph has been years in the making.
"I have been chasing a shot like that for years," Mr Eades said.
"I shot it on approach, it wasn't until it was nearly on top of us that a huge bolt came down right in the middle of the frame.
"You can see the shelf cloud, the ocean had all the reflections underneath."
And Mr Eades readily admits a little luck plays into a photograph like that.
"Sometimes you can get unlucky, the strike will just be too far or too close," he said.

Mr Eades said photography is a passion for him, something he has focused on for the last six years.
"I just shoot what I am interested in," he said.
"I used to focus on wildlife.
"Then I gravitated towards landscape.
"We don't have large mountainous peaks around here but I started seeing seascapes down by some nice beaches.
"I then got hooked on storm photography.
"Ninety per cent of my shots are storms, I just think they are fantastic."

Mr Eades works full-time at Port Macquarie-Hastings Council managing ferry operations.
But he likes the freedom photography offers.
"It is a good creative outlet, it gets me out of the house, it is better than TV," he said.
He hopes one day to potentially make a living as a photographer.
But for now he is happy for it to be a hobby.
"Getting this kind of feedback from the United Nations it does give you a bit of encouragement to keep going," he said.
