There is nothing in current legislation that refers to climate change, however in accordance with the Local Government Act we are obliged to consider the long-term cumulative effects of our actions on future generations, and consider the principles of ecologically sustainable development, and inter-generational equity.
Climate change has been identified as a risk by all levels of government for decades, and how a council responds to this risk is a matter for them, with this being addressed in many different ways to reflect the values, interests and expectations of the community.
Delivery of services and infrastructure is what local government has core responsibility for, and it is the role of the Mayor and councillors to ensure that decisions of council in that regard are delivered upon.
It's really important that we understand that there is no single thing that can be done to protect and repair the damage to our environment as a result of climate change.
It is a complex combination of strategies and actions, and council already does many things through mandated policies, procedures, decisions and everyday actions... whether we are talking about climate change or not.
Looking after our planet and the local environment is always the priority.
We demonstrate this through our land use and planning decisions, design of new developments, transportation strategies, providing shade in open spaces, minimising waste, being water-wise, using reclaimed water to irrigate or sporting fields, looking after the health of our rivers and the ocean, protecting our flora and fauna... and the list goes on.
As a council, we must manage our resources wisely, and in the best interests of our ratepayers and community. We need to stay focused on the projects and services which only council can deliver to our growing community, and as Mayor, I am committed to ensuring that council works with our community to ensure that our environment is cared for as sustainably as possible.
