According to weatherzone meteorologist Kim Westcott, the trough and cold front is "quite big" and could eventually form into a low pressure system somewhere between the Hunter and Mid-North Coast.
There will be a marked contrast between Monday and Tuesday, she said.
"Monday will be hot and sunny topping out at 28 degrees - and that's about five degrees above the average for this time of the year," she said.
"Winds will be from the north before turning into an afternoon north easterly sea breeze.
"But that change will likely impact the weather early Tuesday morning when the winds swing around to the south.
"The low pressure trough and cold front is quite big and as it moves in an easterly direction it is likely to form near the coast into a low pressure system," she said.
There will also be a good chance of rain falling further away from the coast too, she said.
The rain is likely to not be heavy but will rain fairly consistently throughout the day.
There will be a very strong and noticeable difference between Monday and Tuesday.

We can expect somewhere between 10 to 20 millimetres and possibly up to 30mm along the coastline.
The Port Macquarie-Hastings is yet to record any rainfall for September.
The change will also bring a strong southerly wind which will be particularly windy in the middle of the day (on Tuesday) and into Wednesday.
"There will be a very strong and noticeable difference between Monday and Tuesday," she said.
Tuesday's temperature range will be nine to 21 degrees.
Wednesday's range is seven to 21 degrees with around 1 to 5mm.
The remainder of the week will see a slight increase in maximum temperature on Thursday to 23 degrees with Friday mostly sunny at 24 degrees.
The modelling shows a possible change late on Saturday and into Sunday with another low pressure trough bringing a possible burst of rainfall.
The Bureau of Meteorology has issued a hazardous surf warning for Tuesday along the Macquarie coast.
