The weekend is a great opportunity to meet local firefighters, get involved in kids activities, climb aboard a fire truck, see firefighting displays and specialist equipment.
It is also a chance for the community to brush up on their bush fire action plan or to create a plan ahead of the bush fire season.
North Shore RFS station captain Kingsley Searle said everyone can do their bit to prepare your family and property ahead of a long, hot and dry bush fire season.
"Over 600 RFS brigades are holding Get Ready days over the weekend to ensure people have a plan for the upcoming fire season," Mr Searle said.
"It is also a timely reminder with all the smoke currently in the Port Macquarie area. There is no excuse for not having an action plan."
Mr Searle said the plan makes people think about what to do if a fire threatens your home.
"One of the big decisions is deciding when to stay and fight the fire and when to leave," he said.
"And if you stay do you have the resources to protect your home and yourself. Another part of the plan is to ensure you house is as safe as it can be by removing overhanging branches and keep your gutters clean.
"We are also trying to get the message out that it doesn't matter where you live you need to have a plan.
"Fire can spread very quickly and if the forecast is to be believed we are in for an extreme fire season.
"Everything is a lot drier than last year and so your action plan is now more important than ever before."
