An upgrade project included the widening and resurfacing of Lighthouse Road from Matthew Flinders Drive through to the lighthouse, the installation of kerb and guttering and the replacement of stormwater services.
A new footpath runs from Davis Crescent through to the existing elevated viewing platform and parking in the lighthouse's lower car park has been formalised.
Mayor Peta Pinson and Cowper MP Pat Conaghan opened the Lighthouse Road east upgrade on Thursday, September 5.
Cr Pinson said it spoke volumes to have the road to the lighthouse in this type of condition.
"It speaks volumes to our community to say we care about how our region is presenting itself and it speaks volumes to our visitors as well," she said.
Cr Pinson also stressed the importance of pedestrian safety.
Mr Conaghan said the upgrade work would lead to an influx of people using the facilities.
"I think we will have families walking down here rather than driving," he said.
The 284 metre-long footpath leading from Davis Crescent to the lighthouse area makes access safer for pedestrians.
Mr Conaghan said he was impressed with the end result of the upgrade including the beautiful landscaping.
The project received joint funding of $540,000 from the federal government through the Building Better Regions Fund and $1.04 million contributed by Port Macquarie-Hastings Council as a cash contribution of $540,000 and an in-kind amount of $500,000.
The council awarded the construction tender to Eire Constructions in May with work starting the following month.
The upgrade was completed ahead of schedule.
Meanwhile, Rotary Club of Port Macquarie Sunrise members also attended the official opening.
The club has been instrumental, in partnership with the council, in restoring and enhancing the lighthouse and surrounding headland.
