The exams are a culmination of 13 years of hard work and the final hurdle that stands between them and the big wide world.
Because of that, it is also often a time of stress, anxiety and worry.
Lisa Hogan, clinical lead at headspace Port Macquarie said year 12 students and parents need to keep the next few weeks in perspective.
"Does the hype around the HSC make it feel like it will be the end of the world if you don't get the right marks? Yes but in reality your marks and ATAR are just a number and what ever happens is not the end of the world," Ms Hogan said.
"The key is having some perspective about everything. If you have passion for a certain career path or area, passion is what will get you there and there are so many options now for young people.
"Obviously at the moment that is easier said that done but there are things students and parents can do to help reduce the stress that surrounds young people at this time."
Ms Hogan said setting clear boundaries and devoting specific time to study, sleep and relaxing is crucial for keeping a good mental health.
"Students will have been studying all year but creating a study plan for the next few weeks might be a good start," she said.
"Make sure it's balanced with other important things like 'me time' and sleep because both of those things are also important.
"It is also important that parents realise the stress students would be feeling right about now and potentially give them a rest from household chores for the duration of the exams."
She said headspace also have lots of online resources for young people to access any time of the day or night.
"On our website there are great resources available to everyone any time of the day.
"We know mental health can effect physical health so ensuring your mental health is on track is one of the best things you can do during known stressful times."
