The information board describes the life of John Oxley, Surveyor General and explorer and his 1817 Lachlan River and 1818 Macquarie River expeditions.
Phil Hayward, chairman of the Seniors Group of Surveyors said the unveiling marked a special day in history.
"Last year we (Seniors Group of Surveyors NSW) followed John Oxley's journey from Bathurst to Port Macquarie in time to coincide with the 200th anniversary of Oxley's arrival in Port Macquarie," Mr Hayward said.
"An information board was prepared and sent to council in the expectation that it would be erected to commemorate his arrival.
"Sadly at the time this did not happen and on our return to Sydney steps were taken to retrieve the board from Council's work depot.
"Fortunately after that things changed and after receiving council support steps were taken to ensure the board would be erected."
Mr Hayward said it is wonderful the board will now be able to help inform anyone who visits it at Flagstaff Hill.
"The board not only commemorates Oxley's discovery of Port Macquarie but also the acknowledgement of his subsequent three visits by sea," he said.
The board has been produced and erected in the interests of surveying and mapping and to show local heritage by the Institution for Surveyors NSW and is funded by the Seniors Group for he Institution of Surveyors NSW.
Port Macquarie-Hastings mayor Peta Pinson was on hand at the official unveiling ceremony and commended the surveyors group for its installation.
"John Oxley is held in high esteem in Port Macquarie and we started bicentenary celebrations last year and will continue in 2021," Ms Pinson said.
