Annika decided to swap the snow covered mountains of Switzerland for a year by the ocean to gain some perspective.
"My sister did a Rotary exchange to Alaska a few years ago and loved it, so when I was asked if I wanted to do one I thought why not," Annika said.
"In Switzerland between year nine and 10 we have to decide what we are going to do - either more study to get a job so coming on exchange now is perfect for me."
Annika arrived in Port Macquarie at the end of July and said even in the few weeks she has been here things have begun to seem normal.
She is currently studying at St Columba Anglican School and is in year 10.
"It was hard the first few days getting used to everything here," she said.
"The weather is a lot more windy here.
"Back home we don't have to wear a uniform so on windy days I can wear pants but at school here we have a uniform so that has taken some time to get used to.
"I have started to make some friends at school and my first home family have been really nice to me.
"I wanted to come on exchange because I wanted to experience a different life and see how other people grow up so I am excited about what will happen during the year."
Annika is in Port Macquarie after being sponsored by the Rotary Club of Port Macquarie Sunrise and will be looked after by four local host families during her year.
Said she has already had some Australian experiences and hopes to embrace all the country has to offer.
"I have been to the Koala Hospital and Billabong Zoo already and I have touched a koala, a kangaroo and a crocodile. I love the Coastal Walk and I have been to the top of North Brother Mountain at Laurieton.
"While I am here I also want to learn how to surf and try kangaroo so hopefully I can do that."
