The Bureau of Meteorology has issued a hazardous surf warning along with a strong wind warning covering Wednesday and Thursday.
The bureau says the surf and swell conditions are expected to be hazardous for coastal activities such as rock fishing, boating and swimming.
NSW Police Marine Area Command says people should consider staying out of the water and avoid walking near surf-exposed areas.
Rock fishers should avoid coastal rock platforms exposed to the ocean and seek a safe location that is sheltered from the surf.
Boaters planning to cross shallow water and ocean bars should consider changing or delaying their voyage. Boaters already on the water should carry the appropriate safety equipment and wear a lifejacket.
Boaters should remember to log on with their local Marine Rescue radio base, via VHF Radio or the Marine Rescue APP, and consider their safety management plan.
Meteorologist with weatherzone Jacob Cronje said a low pressure system over the lower part of the Tasman Sea was directing heavy surf up the coast.
"The Macquarie coast will start becoming hazardous from early (Wednesday) and onward," he said.
These conditions will continue into Thursday with three to four metre swell in the morning and continuing throughout the day with possible six to eight metre swell by noon.

"The current forecast is for large and powerful surf conditions by early evening with a two to three metre swell.
"These conditions will continue into Thursday with three to four metre swell in the morning and continuing throughout the day with possible six to eight metre swell by noon.
"Those conditions will decrease by Friday, initially remaining at that six to eight metre mark before abating to three or three metres," he said.
"We are expecting winds to remain west to south westerly on Wednesday becoming southerly late on Thursday or early Friday."
Mr Cronje said a cool change was forecast for early Friday.
This change could also see possible showers late Thursday or early Friday and mainly about the coast.
We can also expect strengthening winds on Thursday which will see an increase in "significant wind chill", he said.
"Thursday evening and Friday morning will feel quite cold," he added.
Wednesday's maximum temperature will top 23 degrees while Thursday's temperature range is nine to 22 degrees.
Friday will see a seven degree start to the day - but will feel colder - before topping out at 20 degrees.
