Elly knew wonderful doctors and nurses would do everything they could to help, but she wanted to see if there was anything, above being a loving daughter, she could do to help.
And so she turned to the Cancer Council for guidance.
"Pretty much everyone knows someone who has been diagnosed with cancer and the whole thing is pretty terrible," Elly said.
"When my dad got sick my partner Sebastian and I knew we wanted to do more to raise money for Cancer Council to help find a cure for the awful disease.
"We knew about Cancer Council's Shit Box Rally which is a massive car rally which has raised millions of dollars to help scientists find a cancer cure, but that is really competitive and we wondered if there was something else we could go in.
"Then we found out about the Mystery Box Rally which is a smaller version and it is a surprise where the trip goes."
They signed up and bought an EB Ford Falcon but circumstances changed and Elly was unable to go on the trip. But it all worked out as Sebastian's best friend Felix signed up in her place.
"It was actually pretty excellent because Felix's family have been touched by cancer so he was really happy to sign up for the rally,' she said.
"Before the rally each team has to raise at least $3,500 for Cancer Council and we are really proud to have already raised over $11,000 thanks to the community.
"We have been fundraising pretty hard since January and we are just hoping to raise as much money as we can for Cancer Council.'
It has been announced the Mystery Box Rally in 2019 will start and finish in Byron Bay but the trip itself is only revealed to the drivers when they wake up each day.
"We are team Noeyedear and it is so exciting. The boys are really keen to head to Byron on Friday and the rally is from August 17 to August 21."
