A check of his mirrors revealed sparks coming from the offside rear wheel of the trailer. The driver stopped in a marked bay about 300 metres north of the bridge.
Using two fire extinguishers, the driver tried to put out the fire, but was unable to as it had spread from the wheel to the car carrier. Triple zero was called as other truck drivers stopped to help.
NSWFB were first on the scene followed by RFS units from Sancrox, Lake Innes and Telegraph Point. Both lanes of the highway were blocked.
The fire was extinguished about 3.30am. The car trailer was severely damaged. Four of the six motor vehicles on the car carrier were destroyed. The prime mover was undamaged and the driver was uninjured. Salvage being organised by the owner.
The highway is open but may cause some traffic delays whilst salvage takes place.
