The Flyers dominated the Mustangs under 11s in the first half taking an emphatic 69-9 lead into the main break.
But an injury to a key Flyers player led to a recovery by the Mustangs in the third quarter, with two goals to Tadgh Brislane, and another to Tanner Lewis-Bain.
Isaac Luke booted a long range goal early in quarter four, before Tadgh Brislane landed his third for the match.
It was too little too late for the Mustangs who were defeated 70-50.
The under 13s then took to the field and Ben Drewitt found an early goal for the Mustangs. But the Flyers took advantage of the breeze responding with four unanswered goals, to take a 16 point lead into quarter time.
Ruben Avelin found the first of his two goals early in the second quarter, before Jackson Griffin broke through several tackles to boot another. The Mustangs suddenly found themselves leading 33-25 at the main break.
Vykan Hart was unlucky with his first goal attempt of the third quarter touched in flight, and his second hitting the post.
Four defenders couldn't stop Angus Roohan though from getting a handball away to Hamish Gallagher, who obliged with his second goal midway through the third.
An upset seemed possible against the highly placed Flyers, with the Mustangs leading 48-38 at three quarter time.
But the Flyers stepped up a level kicking two critical goals to set up a thrilling finish. Isaac Luke broke free from the defensive tussle finding a behind to narrow the margin to just one.
The Mustangs then controversially gave away a 50 metre free kick, which saw the Flyers advance field position and hold on for the narrowest of wins, 51-49.
