The program is part of Landcare's ongoing commitment to continue educational work in the community to bring the bush and animal corridors into suburban backyards.

Landcare's Estelle Gough said the program had already gained traction among first home buyers and real estate agents on the Mid North Coast.

"Some councils do have a native plant scheme for first home buyers and we wanted to do something similar in this region to continue the educational work we are already doing in the community," Mrs Gough said.

"We contacted real estate agents all over the Mid North Coast and I am delighted to say that a number have already taken us up on the offer.

"The process is that new homeowners will get a certificate which they can then bring to the nursery to exchange for three native plants."

The Port Macquarie Landcare nursery is open on Mondays and over the years has built up to fostering a large range of native plants.

"The native plants are all from the area and grown in our Landcare nursery," she said.

"From germination to planting we have a great nursery that has grown all the plants we will be giving away in the weed swap.

"People can also purchase more plants through us if they want to and we are also so pleased that is happening as well."
