There has been significant misinformation and misunderstanding, and indeed unfounded hysteria regarding the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) monograph on glyphosate.
IARC is not a regulatory agency and does not undertake any research of its own. IARC plays a role in advising regulatory bodies on potential hazards, allowing relevant regulatory agencies to assess any potential associated risks and manage them appropriately.
The Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority has done just that. In fact, every independent science-based regulator globally has comprehensively evaluated glyphosate and found it safe to use.
As with all chemical products, including home cleaning products that are used daily, the message is simple: always read the label instructions to ensure safe and correct use.
Agricultural chemicals, including glyphosate, are some of the most regulated products in the world.
The residents and employees of Port Macquarie-Hastings Council can take confidence from that but more importantly if concerned, inform themselves from credible independent scientific sources, not ambulance chasing litigation lawyers.
