The carpenter and former Port Macquarie Sharks centre was standing atop a ladder to rearrange boxes in the family garage around 4pm on June 17.

A box suddenly fell from above and toppled the ladder.

The one and half metre fall to the ground was the least of his concerns, falling backwards onto an inverted brass table.

The leg of the table impaled him detaching his urethra and prostate before spearing through his bowel and puncturing his bladder.

"When I fell I didn't feel anything. It just happened so quick," said Mr Hine.

"I pulled myself off it and as soon as I did I was just bleeding more than I've ever seen.

"I went into a bit of shock, rang my wife and said 'what do I do'. It was lucky I had my phone in my pocket actually because I started to feel dizzy and fell to the ground.

"I crawled to the front of the driveway and made the call to the ambulance, they told me to just keep calm.

"I honestly thought I was going to die because I was bleeding so much.

"It felt like an eternity but was probably only ten minutes.

"Now the mission is just to survive as a young family with a mortgage, we're just trying to get through this tough period."

The 31-year-old was rushed to Port Macquarie Base Hospital by ambulance after the accident where he was stablised and later transferred to Royal North Shore Hospital in Sydney.

Unfortunately Sam must now wait to heal before undertaking two reconstructive surgeries at Royal North Shore Hospital later this year.

Jemma, who works two jobs as a cosmetic nurse and registered nurse, said it was a waiting game for the family including children, Rocko, 15 months and Oska, 7.

"I arrived before the ambulance and found him in the driveway," she said.

"His back was facing me surrounded by a pool of blood, my heart sank and I thought the worst.

"When he got to hospital the injuries were too bad for surgery.

"So now we are waiting for the body and damage to settle.

"In this case the muscle is torn apart and we have to wait four to six months before they can look at doing surgery on him.

"If those operations go to plan it will be another four to six months before they can make sure everything works."

Despite the accident the family is upbeat and have received about $13,000 through a GoFundMe page.

"We do feel really supported from everyone around us," said Mrs Hine.

"The GoFundMe page has paid for our mortgage payments for the next six months, but I don't know what we are going to do after that.

"We are just praying that it does go well, they can do the reconstructive surgery and we hope they work out."
