And Mid North Coast Dying with Dignity NSW convener Annie Quadroy is delighted.
"I'm very heartened that Victoria is leading the way," Ms Quadroy said.
Victorians at the end of life, who are suffering and meet strict eligibility criteria, are able to request access to voluntary assisted dying from June 19, 2019.
There are 68 safeguards in place.
The state-based dying with dignity groups hope other states will follow Victoria's lead and legalise voluntary assisted dying.
Ms Quadroy said unfortunately, it was likely NSW would the last cab off the rank because neither major political party was in agreement.
"Unless we can get the silent majority, those people in favour to contact their politicians and tell them they are in favour, it's unlikely the legislation will get through," she said.
Advocates are expecting an updated Voluntary Assisted Dying Bill to be introduced and debated in the NSW Parliament before the end of the year.
More than 17 jurisdictions around the world have legalised assisted dying including nine US states, Canada, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, Germany and Colombia.
Advocates continue to campaign for law reform in other Australian states.
Dying with Dignity NSW president Penny Hackett said politicians must listen to the vast majority of the community in support of these laws.
"They must be guided by facts, not fear, and cast their votes based on evidence not ideology," she said.
"Unfortunately, many people suffer terribly at the end of their lives, even with the best palliative care.
"Politicians must respond with compassion and respect for those of us who want the option of a peaceful death."
Meanwhile, Doctors for Assisted Dying Choice member Dr Jill Gordon will be the guest speaker at a Mid North Coast Dying with Dignity NSW meeting on August 17.
The special forum will be at Panthers Port Macquarie from 2pm to 4pm.
