Police, who are referring to the discovery at this stage only as 'an item', called divers to the scene on Sunday, June 16 after it was uncovered by spearfishers.
Members of the public, including those spearfishing, were asked to clear the water while Mid North Coast Police District divers searched the area.
A spokesperson from NSW Police said the item will be forensically examined. The police divers are not believed to be returning to the water today (June 17).
The spokesperson said there are no further details were available at this stage.
