Port Macquarie Angling Club made a clean sweep of the rock, beach and estuary section of the N.S.W. Fishing Championships, which concluded at Laurieton yesterday.
The club was the champion club and provided both the champion fisherman and the runner-up. The champion was Fred Denning while Adrian Buttsworth finished second. The winning Port Macquarie six man team scored 983 points and were 400 points ahead of the second placegetters.
Fishing the beaches and rock areas the Port Macquarie team caught most of their fish, which consisted of Tailor, Jew fish and Bream from the Port Macquarie area. The boundaries for the contest were from the south wall at Port Macquarie to Crowdy Heads.
The elated president, Kevin Bramble, told the "News" how the club had been close to winning this event on numerous other occasions, but this year was the first time they had been able to get the title. It was his first year as president of the club and he was very proud to be a member of the winning team, and also to have his brother captain.
Each member of the team received two fine trophies, and all individual winners received wonderful trophies for their efforts. The very handsome "Bitewell Bait" trophy, won by the team is now on display in Crisp's furniture store. Entries for the championships were the largest ever and over 500 fishermen competed.
Rain Upsets Tournament
Bleak conditions with rain yesterday upset the final day of the East Port Tennis Club's annual Queens Birthday Weekend tournament. With record entries, the first two days of the tournament produced some of the best tennis played at Port Macquarie for many years and it was unfortunate that yesterday's rain resulted in only three events being completely decided.
All other events with the exception of one were finalised on the toss of a coin, and the remaining one, the Junior Boys' doubles will be decided in Sydney at a later date. Conditions for play on the local courts yesterday were impossible and those events decided were played at Wauchope. Officials were very pleased with the response from players, and credit must go to them for the successful running of the events.
Building Contract Signed
A $55,700 building contract was signed on Friday afternoon for extensions to the Port Macquarie R.S.L. Club that will enable it to rank with the largest and most modern in any New South Wales country town. In the club's committee room three copies of the contract and specifications were signed by the president of the R.S.L. Sub-branch Mr. J. H. Steep, the building contractor, Mr. W. J. Kesby of Kempsey, and the architect Mr. W Babic.
The contract completion date is 3 October 1969. The contract calls for a 120 x 60 feet extension to the mixed lounge which will more than double the present seating capacity. Other features are a new boomerang shaped, stainless steel lounge bar with upholstered fronts and extensions and improvements to existing toilet facilities. Mr Babic said a decorative feature of the extended lounge will be the fluorescent lighting all around the edge of the ceiling.
