During National Blood Donor Week, Port Macquarie resident Pam Varney says she is happy to donate because you never know when you will need blood yourself.

Ms Varney has a standing fortnightly appointment at the Port Macquarie Blood Centre to donate plasma and said more people should do the same.

"I donate plasma every two weeks and have done for many, many years," Ms Varney said.

"I actually decided to donate blood after overhearing a young couple talking about how their young child has to receive blood every few weeks to stay alive.

"It really hit home just how important it is for people to donate blood and I just haven't stopped. It is wonderful to know what you are donating will make a big difference in the life of someone in need."

Every year, on 14 June, countries around the world celebrate World Blood Donor Day. The event serves to raise awareness of the need for safe blood and blood products and to thank blood donors for their life-saving gifts of blood.

Blood is an important resource, both for planned treatments and urgent interventions. It can help patients suffering from life-threatening conditions live longer and with a higher quality of life, and supports complex medical and surgical procedures.

Blood is also vital for treating the wounded during emergencies and has an essential, life-saving role in maternal and perinatal care.

Unfortunately Blood Service data shows that of the 91,000 Australians who gave blood for the first time in the past 12 months a staggering 43 percent did not return to make a second donation.

"Donating blood is really easy and simple. It doesn't hurt and you always get a milkshake or cookie after as a little incentive," she said.

"Because I donate so often it is just a habit I have gotten into and I would encourage everyone to do the same."

Nicky Breen from the Australian Red Cross Blood Service said the Port Macquarie Donor Centre is always in need of additional donors to join the donating ranks.

"Australia needs a new blood donor every five minutes to keep up with demand," Ms Breen said.

"We need more people to make blood or plasma donation a regular, life-saving habit.

"It takes just one our of your time to donate blood and every donation can help save up to three lives."
