The 26-year-old man was charged by Glen Innes police on Thursday night after allegedly registering a blood alcohol level above 0.15.
He allegedly lost control and crashed his car into the median strip on Church Street at 11.45pm, which caused extensive damage to the front of his car and caused both airbags to deploy.
Police said the man had been drinking at a Glen Innes pub.
Police are concerned he may have been attempting to return to his home in Port Macquarie, some four hours away.
Depending on the route, they said he easily could have lost control on the long and winding road, or hit another car.
The man was charged with negligent driving and high range drink driving and will appear in Port Macquarie Local Court on June 24.
