The 93-year-old died peacefully at his Port Macquarie home surrounded by family.
A service of thanksgiving for Bill's life begins at 10.30am on Saturday, June 8 at Innes Gardens Memorial Park Crematorium.
Bill served the community in a range of capacities from the army to local government and the funeral industry, as well as in voluntary roles.
William George (Bill) Alcock, born and educated in Glen Innes, was the eldest child of William and Louisa Alcock.
He left school at age 14 and started his working life as a junior clerk with the then Glen Innes Municipal Council.
Bill put his local government career on hold when he joined the army and served in Borneo during World War II for 15 months.
After leaving the army in 1947, Bill returned to Glen Innes Municipal Council as a paymaster before becoming the shire clerk at Walcha.
Port Macquarie beckoned in 1957 when Bill was appointed as town clerk at the then Port Macquarie Municipal Council.
Port Macquarie was a sleepy fishing village back then and the council only had a handful of staff.
Town clerk was the equivalent of today's general manager position.
Bill met Patricia Thomson at the Carnival of the Pines and the pair married in 1959.
They had three children - Mark, David and Susan.
When Port Macquarie and the Hastings Shire Council amalgamated in 1981, Bill became the new entity's deputy town clerk.
It was a position he held for five years before a change of direction led to the hospitality industry including relief hotel management in Sydney.
Bill and Patricia returned to Port Macquarie where Bill worked in the funeral industry for about two decades.
Bill in later life vowed if he had his time over again, he would work as a funeral director as it was a very rewarding job.
His community involvement spanned Apex, Rotary and the Garden Village board, while he was an avid letter writer to the Port News.
Bill contributed greatly to the development of Garden Village during his time on the board from 1997 to 2015.
