A $4950 investment from Port Macquarie-Hastings Council has led to 1500 Green Caffeen reusable coffee cups branded with our region's destination marketing message.
Green Caffeen founder Martin Brooks said the branding opportunity with councils allowed the scheme to get more cups into circulation.
He said the cups branded with our region's destination marketing message had the potential to go anywhere in Australia.
Green Caffeen is on a mission to save disposable coffee cups from entering landfill and our oceans.
"If everyone does lots of little things, we can make a big change," Mr Brooks said.
The swap and go coffee cup scheme provides reusable cups to participating businesses.
More than 180 businesses across Australia support Green Caffeen.
Scheme members can take the cup away with them and hand it in when they buy another coffee in a clean scheme cup.
The scheme is managed through a phone app.
The only time Green Caffeen members are charged is when a cup remains inactive and is not scanned back into the scheme within 30 days.
Mayor Peta Pinson said the council was pleased to support the Green Caffeen initiative.
She said tourism, sustainability and reduction of waste were so very important.
The council's waste projects officer Nicky Julian said single-use coffee cups were an avoidable waste.
"We are avoiding single-use waste and we are avoiding litter through [supporting] this initiative," she said.
Council's group manager economic development and communications Liesa Davies said it was important to promote the region through many different mechanisms.
"We are hopeful as the cups spread to other regions, people will have conversations about Port Macquarie and help drive that awareness about our destination," she said.
Sandbox at Flynns Beach is among the participating cafes.
The co-owner, Latif Ucdereli, said the beach and the environment were key to the way the business operated.
He described the Green Caffeen initiative as amazing.
