From surf lifesavers on paddle boards to the young and old standing road side making sure spectators and athletes stay safe, volunteers are the backbone of Ironman.

On May 5, the day began before 6am for most volunteers and lasted well into the night blocking roads, handing out water and food to the athletes and standing at road closed signs.

Many volunteers donating their time will get money for their school, sporting or the community group they volunteer with.

Imala Smith from Hastings Secondary College was on one of the many food stands handing out vegemite on sticks and pretzels to athletes.

"This is the first time I have been doing this job on Ironman day," Imala said.

"In the past I have done the water station but I wanted to mix it up a bit this year.

"I like helping out because I could never do what the athletes do but to see their commitment and dedication up close is cool."

Jessarn Blunden was on a drink stand and said the whole day was great fun.

"The whole atmosphere is so much fun and everyone is happy watching the athletes come past," Jessarn said.

"I am excited to also be representing my school and helping out the community."
