And for a day's work, will benefit from extra funding.

Around 60 sporting clubs, organisations and university student groups volunteered their time for the events over the May 5 weekend and in return, will receive about $58,000 in funding grants.

Port Macquarie Vintage Port's Golden Oldies Rugby Union committee member Leon Anderson said volunteering at Ironman is about being part of the community.

"Members have been volunteering at the venue to collect athletes bags for five years," he said.

"They (athletes) drop off their belongings before the swim, come back after the finish to collect their street gear.

"We make sure they take off glasses and nic nacs as well, in case they forget."

Contributions to volunteer groups in the Port Macquarie-Hastings area have totalled around $475,000 over the past 10 years.

"It's not about the money," said Mr Anderson.

"As volunteers in the community, we see clubs getting involved and it shows the spirit of Port Macquarie.

"It's about putting back into the community, something we can do and helping a great event for Port Macquarie.

"It's a great international event just to watch and helps pay insurance when we play (during the season)."

Local Organising Committee finance director Rob Harris said clubs could buy new equipment with funding from the event.

"In 2018, we provided funds totalling $58,900 and a similar amount has been budgeted for this year," he said.

"The funds are donated to the local clubs or organisations for them to use for whatever purpose they choose to do.

"This could include new equipment, end of season trips or just assist in their overall funding which the organisation needs to run their group."
