That's the premise behind the formation of the community-based group Revive Lake Cathie.
The group will hold a public forum on Saturday May 4 at the Lake Cathie Bowling Club at 3.30pm.
The rise of the group parallels increasing community concerns about the health of the popular lake as a local venue and a tourist destination.
President of the group, Danielle Maltman, praised the broader community for their willingness to step up and work toward a common goal.
"I can't begin to tell you how amazing these people (volunteers) are," she said.
"This (group) is not a single person thing and everyone is really community-focused.
"We haven't had to go out to encourage people to join up, they are coming to us offering their support and encouragement," she said.
"We feel the momentum is swinging back our way on this issue, particularly because of the feedback from the community, our councillors and the candidates in the federal election in Lyne and Cowper."
In a submission to council, the group emphasised its focus was about implementation and not creating more reports.
Ms Maltman said the group was pushing council to provide it with an already-completed environmental impact study.
She said this would help focus on a whole of environmental approach, which should be a focus.
The president described the level of community support as "phenomenal".
"This was not (the community support) overly unexpected given the nature of what we are dealing with, but it is nonetheless outstanding," she added.
Saturday's forum will provide an update on how the Revive Lake Cathie plans to future proof the lake. There will be three speakers.
"We are going to provide an update on the people behind the group, what we have already undertaken and completed in just one month since formation along with what our implementation and roll out strategy is for 2019," she said.
"There will be a question time sessions as well.
"Our three speakers include, Shalise Leefield, Camden Haven High School marine biologist and teacher Deborah Geronimi and Brett Peterkin.
"Brett was successful in saving Hexham swamp and Wallis Lake. He will talk to our meeting about his successes and how the community can get involved and key learnings from his experiences.
"This is a pretty exciting time for our group and the Lake Cathie community," she said.
Ms Maltman said the group's submission would likely be listed on council's June agenda.
The group was formed in March 2019 and quickly established a platform of community focus and support. Within weeks of formation it hosted a successful meet and greet at the lake.
The Revive Lake Cathie forum is at Lake Cathie Bowling Club on Saturday May 4, starting at 3.30pm.
