An hour later he was preparing to host the day in Port Macquarie in his dual role as president of the club.
"It's always at Taree, but their fields were unusable," Keegan said.
Keegan then received a phone call from the Group 3 junior rugby league president asking if the Sharks could put on a barbecue at their Wood Street fields.
"I did my best and I think we pulled it off," he said.
The host club fielded eight teams - two each in the under-10, under-11 and under-12 divisions while their under-13s and under-16s were also represented.
"I think it was the first time the day has been held up north," the Sharks president said.
"The kids get a guaranteed two or three games on the day and our under-10 Blues and under-12 Black teams won their pools."
Sharks' under-12 Black coach Glenn Scott said his team only conceded two tries in three games.
They defeated Taree Panthers 32-4 and Taree-Old Bar 20-4 on the way to a 16-0 shutout of Forster-Tuncurry Hawks in the final.
"Both the teams were undefeated going into that game so it was a pretty impressive win," Scott said.
"Not to have any tries scored against in the final was a really good effort.
"Overall we only conceded two tries in three games and some were against much bigger opponents."
Scott said front-rower Jackson Roberts was one of their stronger performers while second-rower Beau Chegwedden and centre James Brown were also impressive.
Each division from under-10s through to under-16s competed on the day in the knockout, round-robin format.
Junior players had the added bonus of having a photo taken with Sydney Roosters superstar Latrell Mitchell who had made the trip up.
He had returned home to Old Bar following the Roosters' win over Brisbane at the Sydney Cricket Ground on Thursday night.
The Group 3 junior rugby league season will kick off on April 27.
