School students took time out from their studies to have carrots, celery, potatoes and other vegies, encouraging people to eat healthy as part of Vegetable Week.

Kids from St Josephs Primary School were some of the 50,260 children across 302 schools who munched on vegies for the day.

St Josephs year three students, Chelsea Meehan, 8 and Lucinda Giurissevich, 8 said they think vegetables are great.

"They are yummy in soups, I like tomatoes because they are juicy, nice and sweet," said Chelsea.

"Celery and carrots are my favourite, carrots have both a sweet and savory taste," said Lucinda.

As part of the event 30 Mid North Coast schools and 13 early children's services received vegie boxes donated by Woolworths, Benning's Blueberries, Kenny Little's and Golden Dawn.

Only about 5.4 per cent of children across the nation are eating the recommended serves of vegetables, according to a National Health Survey from 2014-15.

Mid North Coast Local Health District, health promotion officer Gavin Jones said event was all about positive attitudes towards eating vegetables.

"Vegetables need to be fun and appealing to get children excited about eating them," he said.

"It's great to see so many schools and early childhood services signed up to be involved this year and being able to provide free vegie boxes to the schools means that all children will be able to participate."
