Camden Haven Marine Rescue were called out to the 21 foot Bertram Cuddy Cabin (half cabin boat) stranded around 10.20am on Thursday, March 29.
Camden Haven Marine Rescue unit commander Ken Rutledge said three crew members were sent out to rescue the boat which was believed to be having gearbox problems.
"The vessel carrying two people was broken down about five miles east of the bar and had to be towed back to the North Haven boat ramp," he said.
"The water was very choppy and the sea was quite lumpy at the time."
To the surprise of rescuers and boat owners on returning to land it was discovered the boat had lost its propeller whilst fishing for dolphin fish.
Mr Rutledge said a boat losing its propeller while at sea was unusual and reminded boat owners to undertake regular maintenance to avoid problems.
"Boats are in need of consistent general maintenance," he said.
"Always check your propeller for nicks or bangs.
"Watch and check the boat for any issues if it has been a while between launches."
Camden Haven Marine Rescue will also be attending this weekend's Laurieton Multisport Challenge kayak race as a safety boat from 8am Sunday, March 31.
