Around 40 mountain bikers took part in the 24th annual Wests Cycle Classic over five days through the back roads and off roads of Port Macquarie and Bonny Hills.

The group raising over $120,000 for the 24 hour helicopter rescue service.

Riders challenged themselves to endure rainy weather and the 350km ride through Jolly Nose, Bago Winery and Middle Brother Lookout from March 12 to 17.

Ride captain Bernard Corbett, who has made the trek 23 times and captained it three times said the cycle was a gathering of like-minded people raising funds and having an active holiday.

"It's a good cause and a good time away," he said.

"People enjoy the ride for what it is.

"It's the second highest fundraiser that the Westpac Helicopter has, only beaten by the annual ball."

The group also paid a visit to Herons Creek Public School where they chatted the pupils while fielding questions about the fundraising, riding, nutrition and bike maintenance.

"Generally we speak about bike maintenance, nutrition for the ride, the Westpac helicopter and there are always the two favourite questions of how fast we ride and who has fallen off," he said.

"I've got to compliment the Port Macquarie traffic this year.

"Travelling along Hastings River Drive I did not hear one horn blast, that was unusual and very appreciated."

Riders started their journey in Port Macquarie, heading on a 70km loop around the town including forestry roads and road sections such as Hastings River Drive and Old Pacific Highway.

The convoy making it's way to Jolly Nose tracks to meet guest lead rider, Phil Geronimi.

Teams also took part in a team challenge at the hedge maze at Bago Winery and visited Middle Brother as well as a loop of Queens Lake.
