The installation work will take about two weeks to complete.
Monday, March 18 marked the beginning of the installation with a section of nearby parking closed to allow for the work.
The new shade structures will replace umbrellas added as part of the Town Square upgrade.
Concerns were raised in late 2017 about the umbrellas' movement during high winds and they were then only used during favourable conditions.
Funding from CBD property owners, through the Town Centre Master Plan, made the new shade structures a reality.
Port Macquarie-Hastings Council awarded the $186,800 tender to AMAC Holdings, trading as Alfresco Shade, in November 2018 for the supply and installation of the new shade structures.
The entire project, including project management, comes at a cost of about $200,000.
