Deputy Prime Minister Michael McCormack cut the ribbon to mark Highfields Imaging's official opening on Monday, March 11.

The centre's medical imaging technology includes the first PET-CT scanner in the Port Macquarie area.

The scanner uses the latest technology to see cancer and other pathology.

The Mid North Coast Diagnostic Imaging's centre represents a $19.3 million investment which covers the building, equipment and fit-out.

Mr McCormack said when you had a healthy community, you had a happy community.

He congratulated those involved with the centre.

Mr McCormack said Highfields Imaging was a wonderful facility built by local people for local people.

"I know what a difference this is going to make to the healthcare options, the healthcare needs and the healthcare future of the Mid-North Coast," the Deputy Prime Minister said.

Healthcare Imaging Services state manager - regional NSW Matt Ayers said there was a need to bring all of these state of the art imaging facilities under one roof and introduce a new service with the PET-CT scanner.

The centre's technology ranges from the PET-CT scanner to MRI scanner, nuclear medicine, ultrasound and digital X-ray.

Mid North Coast Diagnostic Imaging senior radiologist Dr Peter Stein said the centre would provide a comprehensive range of the very latest medical imaging technologies that would enable faster scan times, excellent image quality and increased patient comfort.
