That's the level of responses Port Macquarie-Hastings Council received during the submissions phase of the planned cinema, entertainment and commercial hub complex adjacent to Kmart.

The proposal is earmarked for the corner of Park and Warlters streets.

Planet Warriewood/United Cinemas, a chain of cinemas owned and operated by the Mustaca family, is behind the proposal.

A Facebook page supporting the proposal is currently on social media. Public opinion was divided on the proposal.

A development application was lodged with Port Macquarie-Hastings Council in December.

The DA includes nine cinemas, gymnasium, fun fair with indoor bowling alley, food and drink premises including two ground level drive-through facilities and retail tenancies.

The basement car park would have a car wash, 153 car spaces and 12 motor bike spaces.

The exhibition period ended on Friday February 15.

A council spokesperson says it has received 200 submissions and a petition with 3000 signatories objecting to the development.

"Council staff are currently reviewing the contents of the submissions and undertaking an initial assessment of the technical issues," the spokesperson said.

"The application will ultimately be determined by the Northern Joint Regional Planning Panel."

One of the main opponents to the DA, Majestic Cinemas CEO Kieren Dell, says a petition opposing the application is still circulating.

"Our aim in publicising the proposal was to make sure everyone possible was aware of it given it was lodged over the Christmas period," Mr Dell said.

"This would give those who either oppose or support it at least had the opportunity to have their say. 

"With over 200 submissions lodged, that says that there is a great deal of community interest in the issue, and assuming many of them were opposing the proposal.

"There are clearly a number of issues that those who are charged with responsible planning for our region need to take seriously "

Mr Dell said the community needs to ensure these issues are addressed and other future large developments that could significantly change the character of the region and affect locals, their lifestyles and their livelihoods.

A traffic and parking assessment forms part of the lengthy development application.

The application will ultimately be determined by the Northern Joint Regional Planning Panel.

The Port News asked United Cinemas for a comment.

In an earlier interview, United Cinemas founder Roy Mustaca said they believed the development was very much needed.

“We believe that we can be of a service,” he said.

“We certainly choose where we can service well and we think Port Macquarie is one of the nicest places.”
