Port Macquarie lifeguard Blake Polverino said beaches in the area are closed today and at this stage likely to be closed again tomorrow.
"There is a lot of water moving around at the moment," Mr Polverino said.
"Beaches in Port Macquarie are closed today and probably for the rest of the weekend at this stage.
"We are advising people not to go into the water and only very experienced surfers should consider going in.
"Yesterday we didn't have anyone go on and we hope the same for today."
After poor conditions at the beaches all week, Weatherzone's Scott Morris said conditions aren't expected to get much better in the near future.
"Over the weekend the Port Macquarie-Hastings region can expect winds between 30-40 knots during the day," Mr Morris said.
"Large swells are also expected for all of the weekend with wind waves making conditions even worse.
"Temperatures should hover around 27 degrees today and tomorrow and showers are likely on both days.
"Cyclone Oma is gradually heading away from the coast so we should start to see conditions improve on Monday and Tuesday but it will be very slowly."
Greg Davies, unit commander for Marine Rescue Port Macquarie said "crossing the bar was not worth it" with today's conditions.
"My advice would be to stay home but if people wanted to take their boats out only stay in the river," Mr Davies said.
"Remember if you do go out in the river log on with our Radio Base via Channel 16 and wear a life jacket.
"We are also updating people on the weather warning on our Marine Rescue Port Macquarie Facebook page."
