Representatives from the Rotary Club of Port Macquarie, the Rotary Club of Port Macquarie West and the Rotary Club of Port Macquarie Sunrise worked together to manage parking for the over 12,000 attendees and collecting and recycling of cardboard, cans and bottles which would otherwise have gone to landfill.
The Rotary Club of Port Macquarie continued its past tradition of managing the parking in the blistering heat while the Rotary Clubs of Port Macquarie Sunrise and Port Macquarie West descended on the fields each evening to manually sort through dozens of bins of waste and retrieve the recyclable materials.
This resulted in over 23,000 cans and bottles and several truckloads of cardboard not going to landfill.
Malcolm McNeil, president of the Rotary Club of Port Macquarie Sunrise said it had been a great weekend with the clubs working together for the community.
“There is only so much that individuals can do to make a difference but as Rotarians we are committed to supporting our community and our environment," Mr McNeil said.
"We hope that combined our efforts in diverting this magnitude of waste from landfill, for just one event, will raise awareness as to the quantum of waste that can be recycled."
Rick Eller, community service director from the Port Macquarie West Club noted that their club have recycled over 190,000 cans, bottles and plastics since July 2018 – the vast majority of which would have ended up on our beaches or in landfill.
Continuing on the environmental theme, the combined Rotary Clubs of Port Macquarie will display their green credentials at the Port Macquarie Hastings Sustainability Showcase March 1-2 at the Port Macquarie Racecourse.
