Volunteer Leonie Heath from the Port Macquarie Animal Welfare Service says the welfare situation of abandoned animals in Port Macquarie is “desperate”
Ms Heath said the situation had been particularly dire over the summer period.
“Summer is peak breeding seasons for cats,” Ms Heath said.
“People are not desexing, they give them away for free.
“There are plenty of places where they can get discounted desexing vouchers from the pound, but people just don’t get the message.”
Last year the group rescued 153 cats and kittens and 20 dogs.
Speaking at the Sensational Seniors Expo in Port Macquarie Ms Heath said the group was independent and did not have the resources to invest in a shelter.
“We look after the animals in our own homes.”
The group services the Camden Haven, Hastings and Kempsey areas.
The Sensational Seniors Expo is the premier event to kick off Seniors Week in the region.
