In collaboration with the Port Macquarie-Hastings Council, the Port Macquarie Dementia Friendly Steering Committee officially opened the Hands on History photographic exhibition on February 13.
The exhibition came about after Dementia Australia awarded the local group funding to give meaningful and interactive engagement to those living with memory loss.
The program was about local residents connecting with well-known historical sites in a fun, relaxed way.
The exhibition will be on display until February 21.
Port Macquarie-Hastings mayor Peta Pinson said the program and subsequent exhibition was a great initiative.
"Council has teamed up with the Dementia Friendly Community Steering Committee to deliver a 12-month seasonal programme of events that aim to raise awareness about dementia," mayor Pinson said.
"Today I was proud to be involved in the launch of the third event in the programme, the Hands on History photo exhibition.
"Hands on History and the four seasons program forms part of Council’s commitment to creating and supporting an inclusive community.
"I would like to encourage everyone to head to the Port Macquarie library to view the inspiring exhibition put together by members from our dementia friendly community."
Each senior artist was provided with a library iPad and went about capturing the fun and playfulness of these moments.
The project took place at three different historical sites across the region; Port Macquarie Historical Courthouse, the Wauchope Community Arts Hall and the Holy Trinity Church in Laurieton.
