Level 1 moderate water restrictions kick in when the combined storage in Port Macquarie and Cowarra dams falls to 70 per cent.

Port Macquarie-Hastings Council's acting group manager Terry Randall says the current dam capacity is a positive position considering the very dry weather conditions and limited rainfall across the state.

"As the hot and dry weather conditions continue across the region, the community is being reminded to do their bit and save water at home," Mr Randall said.

"Our community has done a great job of conserving water and council encourages the residents to continue with our water saving initiatives. 

“Port Macquarie residents are water conscious and great at saving water all year round which means when the weather does get hot and dry, our dam storage levels are in a good position. 

“Making a conscious effort to conserve water at home means that our drinking water supply can remain at a reasonable position for longer. 

“We’re encouraging all residents and visitors to be mindful of their water usage as the hot weather continues, and to visit council’s website for lots of easy water saving tips and tricks,” he said. 

The trigger points for implementing water conservation measures are:

Level 1 - moderate 70 per cent; level 2 high 60 per cent; level 3 very high 45 per cent; level 4 severe 35 per cent and emergency 25 per cent.

The Port Macquarie dam has a maximum storage of 2500 megalitres and currently sits at 80.9 per cent; Cowarra dam has a max storage of 10,000 megalitres and is at 76.4 per cent.

Level 1 water restrictions would include, banning of water sprinklers and fixed hoses with one hand-held hose used for one hour between 4pm and 9am on odd or even days matching your house number while washing of driveways, paved areas, walls and roofs with hoses is banned.

There are exemption forms available for establishing new turf and is available from council's website.
