About 750 new plasma donors are needed this year to help thousands of Australians, according to statistics released by the Port Macquarie Blood Donor Centre.
Blood Service spokesperson Stuart Ward said plasma is used in the treatment of cancer patients, new mothers and those suffering trauma.
"Each donation helps treat people suffering serious burns or cancer, protects people with brain or blood disorders, and protects kids against chicken pox," he said.
"Donating plasma is simple. Just sit back and relax on a comfy couch for 45 minutes while you donate.
“Plasma is a versatile part of your blood, so you can really unlock your blood’s full potential by giving a plasma donation... the whole appointment takes around 1.5 hours."
Port Macquarie reached their target of 616 plasma donations in December last year, with 697 contributions made.
However whole blood donations were just under the target of 266, at 262.
In January this year, Port Macquarie donors eclipsed their whole blood donation target of 264, reaching 291 donations but fell short of the plasma donations by 38 entries.
Former Hastings Secondary School English teacher, Roger MacGibbon said giving blood was a regular welcome break to read a book and have a free Byron Bay cookie.
"I got the idea to donate from the vampire shield schools competition which encouraged students to donate," he said.
"After I retired I had the time to donate regularly.
"I guess the sense of community motivates me, I'm healthy and giving blood is one thing I can do... I also love the Byron Bay cookies."
Mr MacGibbon said donating had always been in the back of his mind, and now he was up to around 60 donations.
"I always have a book to read - the staff impression is always pleased and grateful to see you," he said.
"I encourage people to do it... makes you feel good, I come out with a spring in my step."
