A late-afternoon surge from Sawtell saw them bump Port Macquarie from a top five finish while Wauchope-Bonny Hills finished in 21st position.
Interbranch manager Mel Cockshutt said more than 31 clubs competed in conditions that weren’t always favourable during a tough weekend of racing.
“I think a lot of the kids learned a lot about the surf at the weekend,” she said.
“People had no idea of the drag that was happening with the sweep to the north.”
But after three years travelling to South West Rocks the North Coast contingent relished the chance to race at a new location.
That was despite numerous competitors being swept off course.
The top 10 result was similar to the Mid North Coast performances at interbranch where there were “no real standouts”.
“At interbranch we were steady across the board and our teams did well at country too which means we have depth,” Cockshutt said.
Around 200 competitors across the three clubs from the Hastings took to the water.
NSW Surf Sports manager Rob Pidgeon said it was a quality carnival that highlighted the very best of surf sport competition.
“I would like to acknowledge all the athletes, officials and supporters for an outstanding weekend of racing conducted in the true spirit of surf life saving,” he said.
“Cudgen Headland were outstanding hosts and we certainly enjoyed our time at the beautiful Kingscliff Beach.”
